英文摘要
1029120TsofliasThis grant supports upgrade an existing ground penetrating radar (GPR) system to permit multi-channel recording and coupling with kinematic GPS positioning. The upgraded system would support PI and student research at the University of Kansas with a focus on studies of near surface structures and electrical properties including identification of natural fractures in aquifers and their effects on flow properties, paleoseismological investigations, determination of subsurface microbial activity, imaging of porosity distribution, fractures and flow conduits in carbonate rocks, and geoarchaeological evaluation of Native American Earthworks. PI research has implications for water resource management, environmental remediation and seismic hazards identification. The GPR system will facilitate ongoing international research collaborations which will engage student involvement and support an extant collaborative diversity initiative with the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez which seeks to provide research experiences to minority students.***
