RUI: Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring Beam Physics Research at the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo

This three-year award will provide support for undergraduate research, teaching, and outreach in beam physics at the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) in collaboration with the Laboratory of Elementary Particle Physics (LEPP) at Cornell University. Presently, the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring (CESR) has two modes of operation: 1) as a test accelerator for the International Linear Collider (ILC) damping ring (CesrTA), and 2) as a synchrotron radiation source for the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). The intellectual merit of this award is to continue the ongoing effort of research and development of CESR beam diagnostics capable of quantifying bunch-by-bunch and turn-by-turn beam dynamics to study important ILC damping ring machine parameters and high brightness operation of CHESS. The investigator has a strong record of research on beam physics at Cornell, and will continue existing collaborative efforts for the study of beam optics and dynamics. The research plan outlined in the proposal provides an excellent opportunity for the involvement of undergraduates in accelerator physics research at a 4-year college, the enrichment of the curriculum, and outreach to the public through the Cal Poly's Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematical Education (CESaME).
