The CC-NIE Network Infrastructure project at San Diego State University(SDSU) is constructing and deploying a Science DMZ to support dataintensive science and accommodate specific end-to-end dataflow scenariosbetween SDSU and other universities and national laboratories. Thedesign of the Science DMZ follows the vision and architecture laid outby the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet). Cisco Nexus 7000 and 2000series switches are deployed, along with a 10Gbps connection to theCalREN-HP network with exclusive use by the Science DMZ. Researchers atSDSU are hosting delay-sensitive applications and datasets on Lustreparallel file systems directly attached to the Nexus switches. Theseapplications and datasets support research projects in the numericalsimulation of earthquake rupture and wave propagation, coastal oceanmodeling, pulse detonation engines, vortex rings in Bose-Einsteincondensates, and large-scale data for proteomics, gene promoterbioinformatics, and microbial metagenomics. The project will directlyimpact the faculty and students who encompass the Computational ScienceResearch Center which draws participation from all science andengineering departments at SDSU. The Science DMZ provides researcherswith the capability to rapidly exchange large datasets and deployWeb-based science applications that are accessible through a dedicatednetwork that is separate from, and therefore not impacted by, generalInternet traffic generated by the campus population. The DMZ willpromote remote usage of computing resources at SDSU, cultivatedevelopment of collaborative tools for sharing data with the broaderscientific community, establish new research partnerships, and fosternew mentorship opportunities between faculty and students engaged incomputational science.
