Complementary to a role of calcium-dependent protein kinase-(CDPK)-mediated signalling in early local immune responses of Arabidopsis thaliana to phytopathogens, project C2 studies the function of CDPKs in priming of long-term, systemic immune responses (systemic acquired resistance; SAR). We characterised CPK5 as major positive regulator of local and systemic immune responses, and thus, as a key regulator in immune priming. Future research will address biochemical, post-translational enzyme modifications, providing a mechanistic understanding of priming (and forgetting), and CPK5-mediated control of transcription factor-dependent reprogramming in gene expression during SAR.
