Binary collisions of droplets of different liquids are of great relevance for many processes in nature and in technical applications, where the liquids can either be molecularly miscible or not. In particular, such collisions form an important elementary process occurring in sprays, where the parameter-dependent collision outcomes “bouncing”, “coalescence” or “shattering” determine the spray evolution. Therefore, a deeper understanding of binary droplet collisions is strongly required as the foundation of a rigorous large-scale spray modeling. Direct Numerical Simulations with the multiphase-code FS3D will provide this understanding of the underlying physics needed for a sound modeling of binary droplet collisions.
