The goal of the project is to elucidate mechanistic differences and similarities in the ways that leukocytes adhere to arteries and veins in a rhythmic manner. We will investigate inflammatory leukocyte recruitment to large-caliber blood vessels as well as to the venous and arteriolar microcirculation. We will assess whether lack of rhythmicity in an arteriolar environment can alter the recruitment behavior of leukocytes in the venous circulation. We will combine genetic approaches with pharmacological interventions as well as surgical denervation techniques to examine the underlying mechanism driving leukocyte adhesion rhythms.
