Friction demonstrates the motion resistance between moving and stationary contacting surfaces that exists in a wide number of machine parts. Although friction is undesirable in most of technical applications, it has been utilized to achieve a high level of friction in many other applications such as brakes and clutches. The partners pursue the research hypothesis that the application of active functional materials enables the creation of novel friction pairings characterized by the ability to adapt the tribological properties by an external control action.The fundamentals of adaptive slide bearings will be investigated within the research project. Proper mechanisms and concepts will be worked out which enables to influence the desired tribological properties by means of external control. The adaptive lubricated orifice bearing and the non-lubricated axial bearing will be investigated by experiments and detailed mathematical modeling.
