本研究では、形而上学的関係の一種である実現関係とそれにかかわる概念（心の多重実現可能性）の整理、再検討を通じて、心の哲学における「機能主義」という立場の明確化と再検討を行うことを目的としてきた。本年度は、①個々の実現関係の理解を深め、それらの間の違いを明らかにする研究を昨年度に引き続き実施し、さらにその中で、②実現者と被実現者を特徴づける階層性を明らかにすること、③有望でない実現関係に対する批判を立てることを中心に、研究を実施した。「実現関係」は機能主義という立場を成立させるために重要な要素であるが、その定義に関して対立が解消できない状況にある。①にかんする研究の中では、機能主義の立場に立ち返り、実現関係にかかわる初期の論者の文献の検討を中心に、実現関係の最も基本的な定義である「機能実現」の立場を明らかにすることを行ったが、その中で実現者と被実現者の階層性の特徴づけに不明瞭な点が見られると判明した。そこで、②の研究が必要になり、実現者と被実現者の階層性について時間をかけて検討を行い、一般的な性質の階層性理解（単純タイプ理論を基礎とする理解）が用いられているのではなく、分岐タイプ理論と呼ばれる論理学体系を背景として性質の階層性が理解されていることを明示した。また、③として行ったのは、メレオロジカル実現という実現関係の定義を明らかにすることである。メレオロジカル実現は近年注目を集めている実現関係の定義だが、不明瞭な点が多い。本研究では、この定義について、本来別物である二つの定義を一緒くたにしている点が問題であるとし、実現関係としての不適格性を指摘した。
