项目摘要

二組の英米作家間の影響関係について考察した。対象としたのは、マーク・トウェインとチャールズ・ディケンズ、及び、ポール・オースターとシャーウッド・アンダーソンである。二組の影響関係において偶然の要素が重要であることをテクスト分析から見い出した。トウェインとディケンズについては、二人がそれぞれ抱えていたトラウマ的体験が偶然にも似ていることに着眼した。その一致のため、トウェインがディケンズ作品と似た場面を書くことに繋がったことを指摘した。成果を論文として学術雑誌に投稿した。オースターとアンダーソンについては、オースターがアンダーソン作品に魅了された理由として、「偶然（オースターが作品を書くにあたり関心を持った題材がアンダーソンとたまたま同じであり、後にそれに気づいたという偶然の一致の経験）」が重要であったことを考察した。後発作家の先行作品の解釈に着目し、先行作家の作品の再考をこれまで行ってきたが、今年度は論考を発展させ、下記のような成果物となった。アンダーソンの『卵の勝利』『Mid-American Chants』等におけるコロンブスやフロンティア批判の言説の考察を深めた。言説の背景として、アメリカ・インディアン協会の活動に注目し両者の関連を論じた。同内容は海外の学術雑誌The Midwest Quarterly に掲載された。さらに、アンダーソンの考察を深めるため、Newberry図書館でアンダーソン作品（原稿等）と関連資料の文献調査を遂行した。また、『大いなる遺産』が、南北戦争中にアメリカ北部の政治雑誌『ハーパーズ・ウィークリー』に連載されていたことを鑑み、この作品の北部寄りで反南部(反連合国)的な要素を指摘した。同内容も海外の学術雑誌に掲載予定である。今後の研究のため、『大いなる遺産』のアメリカ社会での受容について、ディケンズ・フェローシップ日本支部で発表を行った。
