本年度は個別研究を総括する総論の構築を行った。まず研究者はシャルチエ、二宮宏之、遅塚忠躬の研究を踏まえて、本研究を「社会＝文化史」の中に位置づけた。これは多義的な「社会」概念と「文化」概念を不可分な相互連関のものとして大きく捉え、「社会＝文化」を、ある社会に生きる人々の生き方の特徴的なパターン（相互連関の「構造」）の総体とみなす立場であり、人間に起点を置きながら、人間どうしの集合的現象に着目することで、マクロな視点に終始しがちな従来の権力構造研究を相対化する試みである。これを踏まえて研究者は春秋戦国期の権力構造を、人と人の結びあうかたちを表す概念である「ソシアビリテ」の視点から以下のように捉え直した。春秋前期の権力構造は、「族」（氏族共同体）の重層的関係という社会的編成を前提とした邑制国家の形態をとった。諸国間戦争の頻発化を背景に、春秋中期より族結合の弛緩が生じたが、人々はそうした社会変化を旧来の族秩序に基づく解釈の枠組みの中で理解し、社会の再編を図った。従来の研究で「春秋県制」として理解された統治制度は、秦漢郡県制の橋渡しとなる新たな支配秩序ではなく、実は社会変化によって生じた諸問題を旧来の族秩序の枠内で柔軟に対応した結果であった。研究者はこの事実を先秦史料のみならず、『水経注』などの後世の地理書をも用いることによって明らかにした。しかし、富国強兵を目的として始められた戦国秦の商鞅変法によって、王権が制度上において人民を個別に把握して支配するという個別人身支配の秩序が成立すると、旧来の族秩序よりも実際の社会の結合関係をよりよく理解できる便利な体系として人々に受け入れられ、秦のみならず他の諸国においても急速に広まった。しかし、旧来の族秩序で政治的・社会的安定を得ていた楚ではその全面的な導入は見送られ、旧来の秩序の枠組みの中での制度的変更にとどめられた。
