本研究では，イギリスの中世からエリザベス朝までの演劇作品において，音楽がどのように使用され，戯曲中でいかなる役割を果たしてきたかを分析するための，新たな枠組みを作ることを目指す。広範囲の時代にまたがる演劇作品の音楽使用の例を，一貫した基準で分類することで，演劇における音楽使用を通時的視点から考察し，その特徴を明確にすることを企図している。2022年度は，中世の宗教劇に続いて現れた，16世紀インタールード作品中の音楽使用例の収集と分析を行った。前年度に実施した，中世の宗教劇からの音楽使用例の収集と分析をもとに，音楽機能の分類モデルを改訂しており，インタールード作品に見られる音楽の機能がこの分類モデルの範疇に入るか，あるいは新たな機能カテゴリーが必要かを検討した。今年度分析を行ったのは，John Heywoodなどによる16世紀前半の作品であるが，現段階で収集した音楽使用例については，すでに設定した機能分類の枠組みに収まるものであった。特に，登場人物達が娯楽として合唱する場面には，中世の宗教劇やシェイクスピアの戯曲との共通点が観察された。よって，これらのインタールード作品については，中世の宗教劇やエリザベス朝演劇のうち，すでに分析を終えた戯曲群と同一基準で数量的に比較をすることが可能となった。とはいえ，現段階では，分析を終えた作品はインタールードのうちごく一部に留まっている。インタールードにおける音楽使用の特徴をさらに包括的に把握するため，対象作品を広げていく予定である。
