项目摘要

1930年代におけるシェイクスピアの文化動員を考察する手がかりとして浦口文治のハムレット解釈、および太宰治の『ハムレット』翻案「新ハムレット」を同時代の精神史を背景に分析した。その成果として、（１）2022年6月26日に関西シェイクスピア研究会にて「近代日本におけるハムレットのロマン主義的転換ー浦口文治から太宰治へ」という題目で口頭発表し、（２）2023年度出版予定の国際ジャーナル「Cahiers Elisabethains」に’Osamu Dazai’s The New Hamlet as an Allegory of the Young Generation in Japan’として掲載される予定である。これらの研究で申請者は、浦口が打ち出したハムレット像が「男性的なハムレット」であったことを指摘し、その背後にあったのはロマン主義的な決断できない思考に対する浦口の批判であり、それは1930年代の日本の政治的腐敗への怒りと密接に結びつくものであったことを指摘した。しかし、浦口の解釈を読んだ後に『ハムレット』を翻案したはずの太宰が描いたハムレットは、浦口のハムレット、あるいは原作のハムレット以上に、何も決断しない人物として表象されていることを指摘した。その理由として、太宰の生きた時代の精神史を参照しながら、あらゆるクライテリオン（規範）を喪失した作者の自己像が投影されているのではないかと論じた。「新ハムレット」を太宰の精神史から論じることで、新たな解釈を提示できた。
