この研究テーマで科研費を取得してニ年目が過ぎた。この間、コロナ禍に加え学内業務のため海外への現地視察は行えなかったが、ホルヴァートの新ウィーン全集版を始め様々な文献を入手することで、二本の論文を執筆できた。一本目は、後期ホルヴァートと「人間の喜劇」をめぐる論考である。ヒトラーの政権掌握により、もはや同時代人の批判的観察から社会風刺劇を執筆できなくなったホルヴァートは、過去の古典作品に依拠しながら改作物を書いていく。その過程で、人類史における様々な段階の人種差別とその克服を「人間の喜劇」というシリーズで作品化することを思い立つ。喜劇『男のいない村』(1937)では、魔女裁判が行われる時代に、ハンガリー王マーチャーシュー1世の姿を借りて偏見や蒙昧を晴らすルネサンスの精神が形象化される。続く喜劇『ポンペイ』(1937)では、古代ギリシアからキリスト教世界へ移行する時代を背景にして奴隷制度が問題視される。ホルヴァートは法を破って正義を問うドラマの構造を下敷きにして、同時代のユダヤ人問題を受容者に問題提起していることを明らかにした。もう一本は、あまり自らについて語らないホルヴァートの問題意識を、彼と近い立場にいた恋人たち、主にユダヤ系の女優たちとのエピソードから逆照射することを試みた論考である。ホルヴァートはヴァイマル共和政からナチス独裁へと至る転換期に、愛する女性たちが過酷な亡命生活を強いられる様子を間近で体験している。それが例えば児童劇『天国めざして』(1937)の女性主人公の造形に及ぼした影響などを明らかにした。初期社会劇に見られる民主主義の模索が、理不尽なナチ体制の成立の中で、改めて正義や人間性の希求として描かれていること、及び戦間期における「新しい女性」の可能性と、やがて政治難民として追われる彼女たちの運命から、ホルヴァート戯曲の射程と現代性が改めて確認できた。
