本研究の目的は、戦国大名大友氏を事例に、戦国大名大友氏とその従属「国衆」との具体的な関係のあり方を追究し、「戦国大名」と「国衆」との違いを明確にすることである。二年目にあたる本年度は、前年度に引き続き室町・戦国期における大友氏関係の史料と大友氏と関係がある地域における「国人」「国衆」に関する史料の収集作業を重点的に行った。対象地域は、大友領国である大分・福岡・熊本各県、その隣接地域である宮崎・鹿児島・長﨑・佐賀の九州各県、また中国地方・四国地方である。該当する自治体の中世史料編を購入し、大友氏当主とその家臣が発給した文書、大友氏関係者が文書中に記された史料を中心に関係史料を収集した。また、『新長崎市史』などの自治体通史編を購入し、各地域における国衆の動向について確認した。『佐賀県史料集成』『鹿児島県史料　旧記雑録』など、古書市場でも入手不可、あるいは高額のため購入できなかった史料集については、図書館の相互利用サービスを利用し図書を取り寄せ、史料収集作業を行った。また、直接対象とする室町・戦国期のみならず、『南北朝遺文　九州編』・『新修福岡市史　資料編近世』などの南北朝期・豊臣期・近世初期に関する史料集も購入し、室町・戦国期の前段階における大友氏と国人の関係、豊臣期・近世初期における国衆の動向について確認した。本年度は、刊本史料集から関係史料を収集する作業が中心となった。本年度の成果としては、大友氏・大友氏重臣・豊後本国内の国衆について、戦国期の政治的・軍事的動向をまとめ一般向けに解説した原稿を執筆した（図書は２０２３年６月に刊行予定）。
