项目摘要

2022年度もコロナ禍のため、当初予定していたワシントンDCおよびハワイでの一次資料収集を行うことが出来なかった。そのため、ハワイの日系水産業に関連する研究課題であり、なおかつ、コロナ禍以前に収集した一次資料および国内で入手可能な一次資料を用いた研究を行った。具体的には、主に山口県、広島県からハワイに移住した日本人漁民が設立、発展に大きく貢献したハワイ金刀比羅神社について取り上げた。海の庇護者として主に西日本で熱く信仰される金刀比羅宮がハワイに設立された経緯をふまえたうえで、日米関係の悪化に伴いアメリカ政府、特にFBIが金刀比羅神社をスパイ組織視したこと、さらに戦後まもなく、アメリカ司法省が同神社を敵性資産として没収するに至る過程、そして神社の信者が司法省相手に資産返還を求めて裁判闘争した経緯およびその結果について、主にアメリカ司法省、GHQ、連邦裁判所の一次資料を用いて解明した。さらに沖縄戦で戦死した「ひめゆり部隊」の女性引率教師、親泊千代子がハワイ産まれの二世であり、両親がかつてハワイで魚商を営んでいたことから、ひめゆり部隊とハワイの関係について着目した。ひめゆり部隊の戦没者の慰霊碑として戦後に建立された「ひめゆりの塔、そしてひめゆり平和祈念資料館の設立の背景にはハワイの沖縄系移民が深くかかわっていることについて、ひめゆり部隊とハワイとの関連を歴史的に明らかにする研究を行った。このように、2022年度は、ハワイの日本人水産業について、主に「信仰」と「沖縄戦」という二つの観点から歴史的経緯を追求する研究を行った。コロナ禍のため、当初予定していた研究トピックからは若干ずれるが、大きな射程において、むしろこれまでにない新たな視点を学界に加える実績を作ることが出来た。
