项目摘要

本研究の目的は、英領マラヤに移住してきたインド人と中国人が、独自の宗教文化を形成し発展させる過程において、寺院形態や神格、礼拝様式などが部分的に重なるというシンクレティズムの動態を明らかにすることである。そのため、2022年の8月には、マレーシアでも華人とインド系移民が多い、マラッカ、ペナン、クアラルンプールで、ヒンドゥー教と華人宗教の神々が一緒に祀られている寺院の調査を実施した。特にマラッカのチンディアン寺院では、華人とヒンドゥー教徒との協力体制と融和が見られた。寺院の関係者や信者らにインタビューを行い、両神々が祀られるようになった経緯や神々の関係、祭礼の形態、委員会組織、信者層などを把握できた。また2023年3月には、シンガポールで、華人が参拝するヒンドゥー寺院や、ヒンドゥー神を祀る華人寺院の調査を行った。ガネーシャ神が華人にとっては財神として崇拝されており、ヒンドゥー教徒とは異なる形式で礼拝されていた。また、シンガポールは人口に対する国土が狭いため、経済的状況、特に土地所有の問題が宗教習合に関係していることが分かった。両調査により、調査目的である、ヒンドゥー教と華人宗教のシンクレティズムが起こる原因と過程がいくつか明らかになってきた。原因としては、①両宗教とも多神教であり、他宗教に対して寛容であること、②共通の活動（憑依、託宣など）があるなどの親和性が見られることがあり、過程としては、①開発のための行政の指導による移動、③経済的問題から、土地や建物を共有するようになるといったことがあることが分かった。
