産炭地（宇部市）の資料調査と資料情報の入力，有識者・関係者からの情報収集を行った。資料調査の項目では特に産業インフラ関係資料に焦点を絞って収集を行った。地元経済界による産業インフラ整備が地域経済圏形成に寄与したと考えられるためである。また，地元新聞の内容について大正初年から太平洋戦争前の時期まで整理した。本研究課題が対象とする地方企業・業種・産業インフラ・その他について重要度を併記しながら，記事内容，掲載年月日を入力した。これにより，産業インフラのみならず，関連企業の動向についてもおさえることが可能となった。有識者・関係者からの情報収集については，炭鉱経営者・関連企業重役の子孫，行政関係者，産炭地域研究者が参加する研究会に継続的に参加し，資料情報の入手，研究成果のブラシュアップに努めた。こちらについては当初の予定を越える成果をあげることができた。これらの過程で，宇部産業界の中心となった沖ノ山炭鉱の経営初期に技術導入を行った人物の回顧録を復刻し，人材調達のプロセスを整理，出版した。
