本研究課題は、18世紀フランスにおける国内商業に関する研究として、大西洋沿岸から内陸に運ばれた商品としてイワシの商取引に着目し、その主要な消費地であったラングドック地方におけるイワシの流通と消費に関する実態調査を行うものである。新型コロナウイルスによるパンデミックの影響を受けて、2021年度において資料調査のための渡航が困難となり、その結果研究計画の変更が必要となった。また、2022年度も引き続き海外に資料調査に渡航することのリスクや本務校での教育業務に支障をきたすことを避け、申請者は2021年度に引き続き、コロナ前に予備的調査で収集した資料とインターネットで参照可能な18世紀に出版された書籍を用いて研究を続けた。以上のような理由から、申請者は、塩漬けイワシ交易に関わった貿易商人の残した文書や18世紀の植物学者・海洋学者デュアメル・デュ・モンソーの記録を読み解き、その結果次のような成果を得た。第１に、ラングドック地方で取引された塩漬けイワシには、ブルターニュ産の他に、サントンジュ地方沿岸で生産されたもの、また、カタロニア沿岸で生産された地中海イワシもあった。第２に、18世紀になると地中海産イワシが一時的に減少するが、そこにはローヌ河流域の環境の変化が関係し、その結果、より大西洋産のイワシが重視されるようになった。また、この研究過程で、大西洋でのイワシ漁の餌となる魚卵がオランダやデンマークから買い付けられ、その帰り荷としてコーヒーが輸出されたことが明らかとなった。この成果については、「一八世紀フランスの国際商業とコーヒーの流通」（『史潮』第92号2022年12月）に掲載されている。
