個別の事例については、ジャーナリストや放送局のドキュメンタリー制作者らへの詳細な聞き取り調査を行った。いずれも報道内容からでは未解明のポイントを掘り下げた。すなわち、さまざまな社会問題の中から、どのようにテーマを選択し、番組を企画し、関係者へのインタビューや、公文書などの関係文書を入手・収集しての分析を行ったのか。さらに、それらの取材結果をどのように番組の形にまとめていったのか。このような制作過程、とりわけ取材の部分については聞き取り調査を行わなければ明らかにすることはできない。時間のかかる研究手法だが、避けて通ることはできないため、丹念に進めて行った。こうした聞き取り調査では、調査報道の番組作りに関わったディレクターらの語り自体が、ジャーナリズム研究や周辺領域の研究にとって貴重な記録となる。そのため、オーラル・ヒストリーとしての条件を備えた形に整理する作業を進めてきた。調査報道の「公文書＆検証取材型」というべき類型については、これをテーマとした、日本メディア学会の研究会（2022年12月）を企画した。実際に調査報道に当たったジャーナリストを報告者、筆者が事例研究の討論者として活発な議論が行われ、参加者から幅広い知見を得ることができた。この類型は、①公表資料（公開情報）の分析　→②情報公開請求による公文書の取得　→③関係者への聞き取り取材　→④新事実の発掘　という流れに沿って行われる手法であり、今後も各メディアによって応用が可能となる。
