本年度は、京都老舗鳩居堂の四代目当主である熊谷蓮心（直恭）が設置した牛馬放生所の意図を検討した。蓮心の「医療情報」施印活動を支えた思想の解明が本研究の課題であるが、そのためには、まずその思想全体の把握が必要だからである。従来の研究は、それについて「国恩報謝」、「勤皇」、「石門心学」といった断片的な指摘はあったものの、いずれも史料紹介にとどまり、体系的かつ実証的検討には基づいていない。よって、今後蓮心の思想を考えるための前提として、現段階で求められるのは、その生涯を年表で整理し、彼が関わった全ての活動の実態と、支えとなった思想を一つ一つ詳細に解明する作業である。牛馬放生所の設置は、蓮心がその人生において早い時期に手掛けた事業であるため、本年度ではそこから着手した次第である。牛馬放生所の設置意図について、従来の研究では「牛馬が殺されるのを見るにしのびず」「老衰の牛馬を憐」んだ以上のことを述べていないが、本研究では、京都市歴史資料館所蔵「熊谷家文書」と、山口県文書館所蔵「吉田樟堂文庫」という文書群を利用することで、以下の二つの意図があったことを明らかにすることができた。まず、一枚摺によって広く世間に共有された「表」では、牛馬放生所は善書が唱える「諸願成就」を意図とする企画として説明された。もう一つ、当事者しか知らない「裏」では、放生所は、蓮心が東野村の困窮救済のために引き受けた、借金返済を意図とする「借財済方」の工夫であったのである。
