大きくわけて3つの領域で研究調査を行った。第1は、本研究のキーワードとなるカタリスト(catalyst)ついての調査研究である。日本語で社会科学の分野に注目し論文検索を行った。カタリストという言葉は、経営学、地域活性化、産学連携、ツーリズム、ヘルスケアの分野で多く使用されていることがわかった。英語論文で社会科学分野の分野に注目しcatalystを検索すると、日本語以上に多様な領域で使用されている。NPOやコミュニティデベロップメントの分野でも多数存在する。Catalystという言葉は、さらに細かく分類され、ソーシアルカタリスト（Social catalyst）、 ソーシアルイノベーションカタリスト（Social Innovation　catalyst）など多様に使用されていることがわかった。第2には、米国を中心とした主要大学において、カタリストの養成講座はどのように開講されいるか、その講座の内容を調査した。大学のホームページから検索すると、主要な大学で短期集中講座のカタリストの養成講座を開講しており、社会課題の解決を中心とした学部、大学院横断的なプログラムが多くあることが明らかになった。第3は、京都にある伝統工芸を教育する大学校を訪問し、伝統工芸の教育現場の視察と、海外からの留学生3名に対してインタビィー調査を実施した。留学生の視点からみて日本の伝統工芸の魅力は何か、卒業後の進路はどう考えているかについて質問した。魅力については、多様な意見が寄せられた。卒業後の進路については、共通して日本に留まりまたは本国に帰って、日本の伝統工芸の店をオープンしたいという起業ニーズがあることが明らかになった。
