本研究は、世界有数のデザインコレクションを擁するニューヨーク近代美術館（MoMA）のアーカイブを対象にし、コレクションの形成過程における日本人建築家やデザイナーの収蔵作品の傾向と動向を検討するものである。MoMAのデザインコレクションの全貌が初めて明らかにされた1957年の「20世紀のデザイン」展は、東京、門司をはじめとする国内４都市で開催されたが、そこでは国内の展示にも関わらず日本人デザイナーの作品は一つも採用されなかった。MoMAのキュレーターによれば、自らのコレクションの傍らに、コレクションの評価と無関係な日本人デザイナーの作品が展示されることで、コレクションの信用が毀損されるという判断ゆえだった。このことは同時期の建築展で日本のモダンデザインではなく書院造に焦点を当てたことと通底し、日本人デザイナーにとっても苦い経験となった。しかし60年代に入ると、剣持勇や柳宗理を始めとする日本人デザイナーによるモダンデザインの秀作がコレクションに加えられ、展示にも出されるようになった。さらに80年代以降は建築図面や建築模型も加えられ、日本の現代建築をテーマにした展覧会も開催された。本年度は昨年度に引き続き現地調査の機会を探ったが、新型コロナウィルス感染症の余波で叶わなかった。ウェブサイトに掲載されたコレクション作品についてリスト化して傾向を把握するとともに、建築模型やドローイングのメディウムとしての可能性について検討を深めた。
