2020年以降、新型コロナウィルス感染症の影響により国内の医療機関を受診する外国人患者数は一時的に減少しているものの、収束した暁には再び増加に転じることが予測される。歯科医療施設における外国人患者受け入れにあたっては、言語コミュニケーションを要因とする医事紛争リスクが懸念されてきた。本研究では、これを未然に防止するという観点から、歯科医療施設における外国人患者に対する言語支援体制を整備することを目的として遂行した。全国の歯科医療施設を対象に、外国人患者の受け入れ状況について、実態把握のためのアンケート調査を2021年に実施した。対象は、観光庁の「訪日外国人旅行者受け入れ医療機関」に登録された歯科医療施設を始めとする全国の377歯科医療施設とし、無記名の留置式アンケートを郵送により行った。さらに、神奈川県歯科医師会の協力を得て、本研究の拠点である県内の計3,778施設を対象として、同じ内容のアンケート調査を追加実施することで、調査の拡充を図った。先行して実施した調査における有効回収率は55.1％、県内を対象とした調査の有効回収率は10.1％となった（2022年3月31日時点）。調査結果より、歯科医療施設における外国人患者への対応言語としては、コミュニケーション、院内標示、各種文書など、あらゆる側面において圧倒的に英語が多く、これに伴い、院内における英語訓練に対する高いニーズが結果に示された。院内の外国人対応では、現状多くの施設において、歯科医師が中心的な役割を担っているとの結果を得ている。また、昨今AIを駆使した翻訳ソフト等も市場に普及しているが、こうした機器の活用より、直接の言語コミュニケーションをとることの方が望ましいとする結果が得られた。一方、過去に経験された医療トラブルに関しては、金銭に関連したものが最も多かった。
