项目摘要

本研究は、海外の先行研究でも行われていない、欧米における身体のための教育（以下、身体教育）の概念の起源と、その概念の変遷について明らかにすることを目的とする。日本における身体教育の概念については、先行研究（木下秀明『日本体育史研究序説』）が指摘するように、明治初期、欧米教育学説の紹介により「体育」という言葉が造語されることに始まる。したがって、その概念の起源は、欧米にあるが、未だに検討されていない。そこで、令和4年度は、ペスタロッチから教育論を学んだにもかかわらず、ヘルバルト（Herbart, J.F.）は、身体教育を否定し、教育目的を精神面の育成に限定してしまうこと、しかし、ヘルバルトの全集で「体操（Gymnastik）」に言及する文献を発見したので、二つの「身体」の観点から分析を加え、ペスタロッチとヘルバルトを比較すること、を計画していた。そして、その成果を教育史学会で発表する予定であった。しかし、コロナ禍の故、海外での史料収集ができなかったため、これまでの科研費で購入できたヘルバルトの古書を用いて検討を試みた。19巻からなる全集から探すのは困難を極めたが、「体操」に言及する著作が3件あることが特定できた。この3件から、これまでに述べられていない重要な知見を得られることが明らかとなった。まず、ヘルバルトは、カントなど当時一般的だった認識論に基づいていること、このため、ペスタロッチにおける自然主義の教育論を批判し、その反対の陶冶主義に基づいていること、そして、自然に発達する身体は教育の対象外としていることが明らかとなった。また、「体操」に関しては、社会性などの精神面の育成としか言及していないこと、つまり、身体面の育成については決して、言及していないことが明らかとなった。
