本研究は、1894年のドレフュス事件以降、国粋主義的ナショナリズムを煽り、フランス社会で台頭した極右政治思想団体のアクシオン・フランセーズ（AF）とキリスト教知識人たちの関係性に注目し、その接近や反発、離反の具体的様相を明らかにしようとするものである。2022年度は、AFに対して一貫して批判的な立場を崩さなかったポール・クローデルの立場が、カトリックのコミュニティにおいていかに特異なものであったのかを検証し、彼の政治思想と宗教思想の特質を明らかにすることを試みた。2021年度にすでに明らかにした通り、19世紀末から20世紀初頭のフランスでは、カトリックをフランス固有の伝統とみなし、その擁護者を自認していたAFに対し、多くのカトリック教徒たちが支持を表明していた。そうしたなかで、ジャック・マリタンに代表されるカトリックの知識人たちもまた、AFに協力的な活動を展開する。こうしたなかで、カトリック教徒たちの安直なAFへの傾倒に警鐘を鳴らしたクローデルには、AFからもカトリック陣営からも両者の蜜月関係に水を差すとの批判が向けられた。だが、彼がなおもAFを非難し続けたのは、AFがカトリック的な信仰に基づいた宗教思想を提示しているのではなく、あくまでも彼らの理想とする政治体制を達成するためにカトリックを利用するものであることを見抜いていたからである。事実として、1920年代にカトリック教会もまた、AFの宗教思想がカトリックにとって危険なものであることを理由に、AFを糾弾する側に回る。したがって、一見、当時のカトリック社会のなかで足並みを乱すかのような政治的立場にあったクローデルこそが、実際にはカトリックの知識人として、自らの信仰に基づき、教会の真の擁護者たらんとして行動していたと言えるのである。
