本研究では，ごく初期段階の日本人英語学習者が英語の主語をどのように習得していくのか検証することを目的としている。理論的枠組みとして生成文法理論を利用し，日本語と英語の構造を比較したうえで，日本人英語学習者が主語名詞句が移動するために必要とされる英語の時制辞（Tense）の素性を適切に習得できるのか調査を行った。主な検証すべき研究課題は以下の3点である。（１）1人称の人称代名詞のある等位接続名詞句（A and I）と3人称の等位接続名詞句（A and B）が主語の場合，3単現-sが使われている英文の文法性を適切に判断することができるか。（２）複数の数素性を持つ3種類の名詞句（語彙：people，形態：friends，統語：A and B）が主語の場合，その英文の文法性判断に差があるか。（３）中学生と大学生は人称素性や数素性をそれぞれどのように扱い，英文の文法性を判断するのか。実験では，3単現-sに関連する8タイプの英文を使い，中学生と大学生からデータを集めた。実験の結果，中学生は主語名詞句を人称代名詞Iと「その他」に分け，「その他」の名詞句が使われている場合はその名詞句を３人称とみなし，3単現-sのある文を正しいと判断すること，中学生はA and Iのような１人称が使われている等位接続名詞句も3人称とみなし，さらに3人称の複数名詞に対しても３単現-sが必要であると判断すること，大学生になると人称素性は正しく扱うことができるようになるが，peopleのような語彙的複数に複数の数素性を与えることは困難であること，がわかった。
