项目摘要

装こう技術を用いた書画文化財修理の中で、水は欠かせない材料の一つである。修理に携わる技術者は、料紙の材料の特性、すなわち原料、製造方法や加工方法の時代性、紙の触感、使用実績からの安全性等、多岐にわたる要素を総合的に理解し、その技術的経験をもとに水による料紙の伸び縮みといった形状変形をコントロールしながら修理作業を進めている。しかしながら、修理作業の難易度は、対象となる作品に用いられている紙質の特性ごとに大きく異なる。本研究では、より安全で安定した修理作業の実現のために、手漉き和紙のシートについて科学的分析を行なう。各手漉き和紙の吸水率が異なるところに着目し、水の収着メカニズムを検証する。また装丁という多層構造にした場合、これまでの伝統的な作業についてどのように工夫されているのかを科学的に裏付けすると共に、シートの伸び縮みといった形状変形を抑制する方法を設定する。１．装丁における和紙の使用事例について先行研究及び修理報告書を調査した。装こう文化財が他分野の文化財と大きく異なるのは、作品（本紙）に装丁部分が加わって形を成していることである。装こう文化財の形態は大きく3種類（軸装・幀装・帖装）あり、其々の形態に合った和紙を選択し修理が行われている。和紙は各産地によって持ち味ともいえる紙質の特徴があり、それを生かして修理に使われていることから、修理報告書の調査では選択した和紙の種類と装丁の形態との関連性について重要視した。また和紙工房を訪問し、原料や製造方法などの聞き取り調査を行った。このように資料と材料を集め、データベースの構築を行っている。２．紙質の評価については、各紙の基礎的な性質を、坪量、繊維観察、厚さ、密度などはJIS法に準じて行った。３．収着等温線に関する実験については、実験データから再現性が取れず実験環境の改善が必要であることが確認できた。再検証を試みる予定である。
