本研究では、ジョージア（グルジア）人とアディゲ（チェルケス）人の歌謡と舞踊の事例から、コーカサス地方における伝統の保存活動と共同体意識と結びついた文化表現のあり方を明らかにする。科研費での研究中断期間中（2021年8月～2022年3月まで）の期間を利用してロシア連邦のアディゲ共和国に渡航した際に、アディゲ人の若い世代の間で、伝統楽器を用いた音楽やナルト叙事詩の他、民族舞踊団で上演される舞踊のレパートリーが民族文化（習慣）「Khabze」として重視されていることが明らかになった。特にジョージア人などと共通するレズギンカをはじめとするアクロバティックな舞踊は汎コーカサス的な文化のアイコンとみなされていることが明らかになった。2022年2月以降、ロシアのクライナへの軍事侵攻が始まり、ロシアでの調査を継続することが難しくなったため、ジョージアで調査を行うことにした。ジョージア文化・スポーツ省の管轄下にあるトビリシのチェルケス・文化センターは、チェルケス人だけでなく、チェチェン、イングーシ、ダゲスタン、オセチアなどの北コーカサスからの研究者を招待した学会を頻繁に開催しており、コーカサスにおける文化研究の重要な拠点として機能していることが明らかになった。特にチェルケスをはじめさまざまな民族の間に伝わるナルト叙事詩は非常に重視されており、本研究ではコーカサスのナルト叙事詩の基本的なヴァリアントと考えられてきたオセット人のナルト叙事詩についてまず調査を行うことにした。トビリシの議会図書館で『Etnograficheskoe obozrenie』などの帝政期の雑誌における民族誌的記述の他、ソ連時代に南オセチアで刊行された学術雑誌『Izvestiya』の複写を行い、ナルト叙事詩が現地の研究者の間でどのように研究されてきたのかロシア語、オセット語、グルジア語の文献の調査を進めた。
