International Alliances Between Experts and Activists in Post-Fukushima Japan

This research project focuses on community activism in Japan after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in March 2011. It analyzes how citizens alarmed by the consequences of the accident found their own ways to live with uncertainties of radiation pollution by soliciting experts from Japan and abroad and creating expert-activist alliances.During the third year, I was working extensively on the edited volume entitled “Japan’s Triple Disaster: Pursuing Justice after the Great East Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, and Fukushima Nuclear Accident” as a first editor, along with Julia Gerster, and Manuela Hartwig. The volume is going to be published in 2023 by Routledge Publishing House. The volume connected early career researchers and senior academics coming from various countries and continents of the world. Presenting research on more than a decade after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the chapters of the volume highlight not only the manifold challenges in the direct disaster response and policymaking but also galvanise the discussion of disaster governance and highlight the variety of disaster (in)justices.The edited volume included my chapter entitled “The Right to Be Heard: Analyzing Parents’ Activism in the Kanto Region” which investigates mothers' activism in the aftermath of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident and analyzes alliances between local activists and experts.
