本研究では、共生型サービス(以下、共生型)のモデルとなった富山型デイサービス(以下、富山型)に着目し、長年蓄積された共生型の設立経緯、運営手法、 支援やサービス等の知見を得ることを目的としている。利用者定員の変更(縮小・拡大)や施設運営の休止歴、事業の複合化などについて、現地インタビューを 予定し、空間整備の変化については、建築図面をドローイングし記録化を行うことを予定していた。しかし、新型コロナウイルス感染症の拡大により、高齢者、 障害者、障害児、医療的ケア児が通う福祉施設は、クラスター発生を恐れ、部外者との接触だけではなく、利用者・利用者家族、スタッフ・スタッフ家族の県外 外出を控え、県外外出があった場合には施設に報告を求めれている。現地調査の代わりに、施設へのWebインタビュー等を検討したが、実際の運営状況、建築空間を知ることが困難であることから実施を見送った。なお、2020年度新型コロナウイルス感染症が開始した頃よりは、現地インタビュー調査が可能となりつつあるが、施設毎の対応に差があり、当初の研究計画通りの実施が難しい状況にあることに変わりはない。プレ調査（郵送アンケート）と位置付けた富山県の共生型を実施したため、2023年度は範囲を全国に広げ、2019年から共生型が設立されて以来、新型コロナウイルス感染症下における運営変化も含めた実態調査（郵送アンケート）の準備をすすめている。
