きょうだい支援に関する施策の動向と課題を分析した上で、ヤングケアラー・ケアラー支援ときょうだい支援の共通点・相違点を整理した。きょうだい支援では、ケアの対象が同年代である故に生じる課題がある。さらに、親が、きょうだいを障害のある我が子のケアの担い手として認識している場合、親と子どもの関係ではなく、ケア（育児）の協力関係、パートナーの関係になると言える。きょうだいは、あくまでも子どもとしての関わりを必要とされているため、ケア（育児）の協力者、パートナーとしての関わりを求められることに、負担を感じる場合がある。きょうだいが担う役割は身体的なケアや見守りに留まらず、親にとってのカウンセラーのような役割を果たすこともある。また、現在進行形でケアを担っていなくても、将来に対する不漠然とした不安等、潜在的なケアラーとしての苦悩を抱えている場合がある。あるいは、各々のライフステージにおいて障害にまつわる差別・偏見から生じる課題や、アダルトチルドレンといった家族関係から生じるきょうだいの特性等もある。さらに、きょうだい支援団体の実践・啓発に関する研究も行った。「北陸きょうだい会」の活動からは、運営者の生活状況の変化（家族のケア、育児、「きょうだい」としての自分から離れる時間の確保等）を踏まえ、他団体との共催によるイベント企画も行いながら運営の維持を図る必要があることが明らかとなった。
