本課題では、2019年以降中東を中心に世界で同時多発的に発生する路上抗議運動を取り上げ、特に、路上抗議運動が構築する共同体の自助性、自立性の強さと、そのトランスナショナルなネットワークに着目し、若年層が追求する新たな「国家」のありかたは何かを分析するための共同研究を実施している。R3年度は中東のイラク、シリア、パレスチナといった紛争地域における社会運動の実態を研究対象とした。各分担者はR3年度は世界大に拡大する新型コロナウィルス感染症によって、海外渡航して現地調査を実施することも、海外からカウンターパートを招聘して共同研究を実施することもできなくなったため、主として現地の研究者に調査依頼を行ったり、オンラインで現地の研究者、ジャーナリストや作家とつなぎ、研究交流、意見交換を行い、必要な調査研究を進めた。イラクではBayan研究所の研究員に委託して路上抗議運動の現場のスローガンや壁絵を写真に収める他、運動家へのインタビューを実施した。繰り越しを行ったのちには渡航制限がやや緩和されていったため、パレスチナに関して、鈴木(分担者)の主導で社会運動研究者のパールマン教授を米ノースウェスタン大学から招聘、早稲田大学にて対面のワークショップを実施した。シリアについては、岡崎(分担者)が現地を訪問した写真家小松氏の講演会を実施したり、シリア人反体制活動家で作家のサーリフ氏を日本に招いて、東京、広島など各地で講演会、研究会を実施した。イラクについては、バグダード大学との共同で実施したワークショップにクルド問題研究者の吉岡氏を研究協力者として派遣し、学術交流を実施した。またアフガニスタンから退避したカーブル大学教授との間に、数回研究会を実施した。これらの成果は、2月に社会運動の比較分析セミナーを東大で開催、来日したイラク、カタールからの研究者とともに密な研究交流を行った。
