本研究の目的は、終末期がん患者の家族に焦点を当てた退院支援プログラム(以下、家族支援プログラム)を開発することである。本研究における『終末期がん患者』とは余命が６か月以内と医師が予測した65歳以上の高齢者であり、『家族』とは主介護者とする。退院支援の対象は主介護者であるが、副介護者も支援の対象に含める。本研究の対象者は緩和ケア病棟に入院している終末期がん患者の家族とし、緩和ケア病棟に勤務する看護師 (Palliative Care Unit Nurses：以下、PCU看護師) が退院支援を実施することとする。これまで、終末期がん患者の家族は介護を担う者として医療処置や介護に関する 指導をされることはあっても、不安などに対する精神的ケアを受けたり看取りに関する意向を表出できる機会が少ないため、退院に難渋を示している家族が一定数存在することを明らかにした。しかし、PCU看護師は家族への退院支援の必要性を認識していても、実際には　実施出来ていない現状であることも明らかにした。本研究の研究メンバーである家族支援専門看護師や終末期がん患者と家族に関わる機会が多いPCU看護師と共に支援内容を整理し、現在行われている退院看護計画に無理なく追加できるような仕組みを検討してきた。また、この家族支援プログラムは、PCU看護師が家族への退院支援の必要性を再認識できるような教育プログラムの側面も持たせることを目指してきた。しかし2022年度は、コロナ禍で家族の面談さえ制限されている中では、この家族支援プログラムを用いての介入研究の許可が下りずにいた。看護介入が出来ない現状ではデータを得ることができず、許可が下りるのを待つ状況が続いている。
