Disorder and the Japanese Revolution: A Global Intellectual History

This academic year, I advanced my theoretical work on the idea of "history of the spirit" and the comparative dimensions of "counter-enlightenment" and on the problem of Christianity in the intellectual environment of Kumamoto; I gave presentations on these topics to help spur my thinking and research. I also followed a few research leads into the 1880s and dug more deeply into the history of women and terrorism in the political and social disorder of the "revolutionary era"; though empirically rather distant, these themes flow thematically from my original interest in the 1870s. Finally, I successfully submitted an article on the "history of the present" using interdisciplinary research methods and concepts that similarly arise from my work on the 1870s; publication is forthcoming.
