東アフリカ（タンザニア島嶼部ザンジバル）、南アジア（スリランカ、インド南部）、東南アジア（インドネシア・スラウェシ島およびベトナム中部）の熱帯脆弱環境での「貧困削減」・「環境荒廃」・「社会的弱者層」に焦点を当て、①在来生業システムの強靭化、②貧困削減と生態系保全を両立する持続的保全型生業システムの形成、③さらには日本国内での類似事例の検索と海外での実証試験の知見の還流および④国内外での社会実践への展開を目的とする。新型コロナ感染症の渡航制限が徐々に緩和されたことによる海外調査を含め以下のような取り組みを行った。（1）ベトナム中部山間地域において、研究代表者らが実施した地域開発事業のフォローアップ調査を行い、当時の活動の継続や消失の状況とその背景を明らかにした、（2）同じくベトナム中部山間地域で、家畜の飼養を軸とする新規生業の形成（在来ミニブタ、野生鶏系交配種、ヤギ、セイヨウミツバチと野生ミツバチの養蜂および発酵飼料の調製）を進めた、（3）タンザニア島嶼部ザンジバルでの在地生業（バニラやカルダモンなどのスパイス栽培）の強靭化に向けた住民参加型の試験を進捗させた、（4）インド南部・ガーツ山脈での在地生業（特にカルダモン栽培）と生態系保全の関係性に関するフィールド調査を行った、（5）インドネシア・スラウェシ島での「生計向上と資源・生態系保全を両立する新規生業（再生ソルガムによる飼料生産とヤギ飼養の複合）」の形成と実証試験を終え、そのノウハウを現地研究者や地域住民に移転した、（6）ザンジバルの植物資源（バニラなどの香辛料作物）のDNA解析の手順を確立した、（7）日本国内（沖縄県久米島、鹿児島県奄美大島、滋賀県米原市、大阪府枚方市）での実証試験を進捗させた。

East Africa (South, Southeast Poverty reduction, environmental degradation and social vulnerability in the fragile environment of the hot zone (central part of the island) are focused on: (1) strengthening the production system;(2) forming a sustainable production system for poverty reduction and ecosystem conservation;(3) To investigate similar cases in Japan, to exchange knowledge from overseas experience, and to develop social practices at home and abroad.
