项目摘要

タイでスコータイ時代以後に主流となる108の吉祥文を持つ仏足跡について、収集資料に基づき、文様図像の調査分析を行なった。まず文様が配置される区画の形は、足裏全体を格子状に分けるタイプと、足裏中央の巨大な法輪内を同心円状に仕切り、各々の輪を細かく区切るタイプに大別される。それぞれのタイプでの図像の配置順の類似や差異、個々の図像の形状を比較検討した。この2つのタイプは、格子状がミャンマー的、同心円状がスリランカ的と言われており、そうした分類の適否についても検討した。タイで仏足跡制作が流行した背景として、スコータイ王朝第6代リタイ王に代表されるスリランカの仏教聖地を模したとする事績が知られるが、そのほかに仏教の宇宙観の具現化など、聖地信仰以外の制作要因についても考察した。現地調査は、インドのボードガヤーで現在も信仰を集めるマハーボディー寺院周辺に所在する仏足跡を実測、撮影した。また、ボードガヤーの聖地信仰を反映して作られたマハーボディー寺院のミニチュア大精舎、テラコッタ製奉献板の調査を実施した。これらの作品調査は、ロンドンの大英博物館、V&A美術館、オックスフォードのアシュモリアン博物館で実施した。現地調査を踏まえ、ボードガヤーの聖地信仰の様相、往時のマハーボディー寺院の姿について、13世紀のチベット僧ダルマスヴァーミンの記録、同時期のミャンマーの関与を示す史料、インドやミャンマーで制作されたテラコッタ製奉献板などの作品を元に考察した。その結果、仏教衰退期のボードガヤーにおいてミャンマー、特にバガンから仏教徒がインドへ訪れ、バガンの建築や造形の影響がボードガヤーに及んでいることがうかがえる。
