歴史学、国文学、民俗学、地理学、社会学、美術史など多彩な学問分野の研究者を結集して、各自の専門性を活かしながら連携して「霊場」の学際的総合的な調査研究を行った。8月1日の研究会は、コロナ感染症対応として、オンラインで実施し、研究代表者・胡光、研究協力者井上淳により、四国遍路の新史料について研究報告を行い、全国から研究者の参集を得た。10月29日には、公開講演会・シンポジウムをオンライン併用で愛媛大学において開催し、研究分担者・浅川泰宏、研究協力者・大本敬久のほかの研究報告を行い、多分野の比較巡礼論について検討した。オンラインでは、北海道や台湾からの参加もあった。これらの研究報告は論考にまとめ、『四国遍路と世界の巡礼』第8号を2023年3月に刊行した。また、研究代表者・胡光、研究分担者・青木亮人・中川未来・西耕生・長谷川賢二・松永友和、研究協力者・井上淳・今村賢司・内田九州男・大本敬久・岡本桂典・神楽岡幼子・川岡勉・田井静明・高嶋賢二・竹川郁雄・寺内浩・長井健・中川未来・野村美紀・松原潔・御厨義道らは、これまでの各自の研究成果を『四国遍路と世界の巡礼（上）』（創風社出版）にまとめて刊行し、同書は愛媛出版文化賞を受賞した。ほかに、月刊『へんろ』にも毎月交代で最新研究成果を掲載した。これらの研究成果を愛媛大学ミュージアムで「聖地へのあこがれ展」として一般公開した。調査活動はコロナ感染症対策をしながら、浄明院（松山市）の資料を借用して学内で調査を行ったほか、四国霊場第15番札所国分寺資料調査を徳島城博物館において、第75番札所善通寺文書調査を香川県立ミュージアム（高松市）で、実施した。
