今年度は西大寺食堂院の発掘調査で見つかった井戸SE950から出土した製塩土器の中で、Ⅱーb類以外の資料について、プレパラートを作成したうえで岩石鉱物を同定する方法で胎土分析を委託しておこなった。昨年度、もっとも数量的に多いⅡーb類の資料について、分析を行った結果、考古学的観察に基づく分類内の類似性が確認され、その生産地の候補地として和歌山の北部沿岸を想定して矛盾しないことをつきとめた。今年度は、それ以外の分類に属する資料について、同様の分析をおこなった。その結果、各分類内の類似性を確認することができたが、一部、想定していた生産地と異なる地域の鉱物組成が判明したグループもある。考古学的観察に基づく資料調査については、古代の主要な塩生産地である若狭地方の製塩土器について、運搬具となりうる小型品を中心に資料調査をおこなった。また、若狭など北陸地域から製塩土器に入れた状態で塩が搬入されていた場合の中継地点となりうる大津宮推定遺跡についても資料収集をおこなった。その結果、大津宮推定地域からは律令期の製塩土器がほとんど出土しないことが確認できたものの、若狭地域の製塩土器については、平城京出土品との峻別が難しいものもあり、胎土分析の必要性を再認識するに至った。西大寺食堂院資料の生産地推定をするためには、生産地の資料収集を進める必要があるため、発掘調査報告書から食堂院資料に類する資料の抽出を進め、研究発表と論考による発表を進めてきた。次年度以降は、これら資料の収集を進め、分析データの検証を行う基礎データをを蓄積していく予定である。また、とくに奈良時代前半期の製塩土器についても、生産地の推定を進めていく。
