This project aims for a novel combination of complementary designs in the study of emotional reactivity to everyday challenges and emotion regulation, in that it will conduct ambulatory and laboratory-based assessments of old and very old participants from the ongoing Interdisciplinary Longitudinal Study of Adult Development (ILSE), also following these up in the years to come. Linking in-vivo and lab examinations of emotional reactivity and regulation at different levels of analysis (experiential, physiological) with an rich set of medical, cognitive, and psychosocial measures that have been tracked over more than 20 years will allow to intensely address three overarching objectives: (1) A comprehensive study of emotional reactivity and regulation in old and very old age under controlled conditions and as people go about the routines of their daily lives. (2) An examination of antecedent conditions - physical health, cognitive functioning, and self-perceptions of aging - that may have served as strengths and vulnerability factors for emotional reactivity and emotion regulation in old and very old age. (3) An examination of long-term implications of the short-term dynamics observed for emotional reactivity and regulation in the lab and in daily life on the old and very old participants' physical and psychological functioning. The suggested research aims to fill in gaps in the increasing body of evidence on emotional resilience in old and very old age, and will substantially enlarge the knowledge about extent, limits, and confounders of emotion regulation in age groups crucially affected by increasing risks of loss that challenge emotional well-being.
