本研究課題は、精神障害当事者・家族のセルフヘルプやエンパワメントに関するこれまでの日本の豊かな知見や実践を適宜援用することで、シエラレオネで萌芽したばかりの精神障害当事者・家族によるセルフヘルプと組織化の動きを支援し、いわばその「開花」を側面から手助けせんとする、学術的かつ実践的な試みにほかならない。具体的には、同国の首都フリータウンで2014年に発足した当事者・家族会との全面的な協力関係のもとで、「実践（アクション）」と「研究（リサーチ）」を融合したアクションリサーチを実施し、現在の当事者・家族会の課題を明確化するとともに、その解決を図る。また、日本の「当事者研究」や「家族心理教育」の理念や手法などを適宜活用しつつ、シエラレオネにおける当事者・家族主体の持続可能なコミュニティベースのメンタルヘルスケアシステムの構築を目指す。しかし、本研究課題では、当初予定していたシエラレオネでの現地調査がコロナ禍のため複数年度にわたって実施できなかった。当該年度（2022年度）になってようやくシエラレオネでの現地調査を実施した。具体的には、シエラレオネ精神科病院を再訪するとともに、精神障害当事者の団体であるService Users and Family Membars Association (SUFMA）を訪れ、聞き取り調査を実施した。また、メンタルヘルス関連諸団体の連合組織であるMental Health Coalitionを訪れ、代表者へのインタビューを行うとともに、翌年度に実施する予定の調査への協力依頼を行った。
