今期調査では以下の事例に焦点を当てた。隠れキリシタンの歴史: 1549年、キリスト教宣教師として初めて来日したフランシスコ・ザビエルの活動を基に、後続の宣教師たちは特に長崎地方で一定の成功を収めたが、1614年にキリスト教禁止以降250年間、多くの「隠れキリシタン」達は、その信仰を地下に潜らせ、密かに信仰を続けることを余儀なくされた。日本では1871年に信教の自由が導入され、1863年の開港後、長崎に日本で最初の正規のカトリック教会が建てられた。現在、長崎周辺には、ビジターセンター、二十六殉教者記念館・記念碑など、隠れキリシタンに関連する施設が数多くあり、12箇所がユネスコ世界遺産に登録されている。この事例では、隠れキリシタンの物語に焦点を当て、それが長崎の歴史に不可欠で重要な要素としてどのように表現され、解釈されているか、また、それが日本における（宗教）観光と宗教的寛容をどの程度促しているかということに焦点を当てることとした。軍艦島（端島）：長崎から約15km離れた場所にある小さな島は、19世紀初頭の石炭発見の後、1887年から1974年まで海底炭鉱の中心地となり、労働者とその家族の居住地が島内に作られた。炭鉱の閉鎖後、特徴的な建物は放置され、その後荒廃していった。しかし、島の歴史や遺跡への関心から、2009年以降、観光ツアーが組まれるようになり、2015年にはユネスコの世界（産業）遺産に登録された。軍艦島は現在、日本の急速な工業化の成功を物語る人気の観光スポットであるが、国際的な（韓国）強制労働の使用疑惑などはツアーでは知らされていないことは、産業遺産情報センター（総務省）でも十分に対処されていない、とされている。この事例では、軍艦島の歴史と観光地としての役割をたどり、特に、島における強制労働の困難な歴史をめぐる議論とその意味について考察することとした。
