本研究は、マルチスピーシーズ・エスノグラフィ論とエスニシティ論との接合を理論的な軸とし、タイ北部平地諸集団（コン・ムアン）を事例とした、象を媒介したかたちの、他エスニック集団を内在的に取り込んだ自己定義のありようを明らかにするものである。昨年度は、エレファントキャンプ観光においてゲストをもてなす場で「ケア」「サンクチュアリ」といった象の保護に関する言説がいかに表象されているのか、という点に着眼点を置き、調査地に複数存在するエレファントキャンプ間の齟齬や対立の状況を明らかにした。対して本年度は、長引く新型コロナウイルス感染症による観光客の激減に起因した、エレファントキャンプの経営変化に焦点を置き、タイ北部平地所集団（コン・ムアン）ではない各従業員によるエレファントキャンプへの関わり方を考察した。なお本調査は、昨年度に引き続きタイ国チェンマイ県で実施した。具体的には、調査対象としていたエレファントキャンプの事業縮小に伴う各従業員の動向に着目し、働き方の変化、職業選択の変化、村落社会との関係性の変化に関するフィールドワーク調査を実施した。これらの調査記録からは、調査地におけるマジョリティであるタイ北部平地諸集団（コン・ムアン）は、そもそも当該社会に出自を持つゆえ、エレファントキャンプの事業縮小を強いられる状況下でも、村落社会に根ざした社会的紐帯によって経済的、心理的に支えられていることがわかった。一方、ツアーガイドや象使いとして村落社会の外部から参入してきた非コン・ムアンは、従来所属していたエレファントキャンプとの関わり方の再考を強いられている状況が明らかになった。村落社会の一員として留まることを選ぶ者や、従来の雇用関係を解消し、新たな土地でエレファントキャンプを新規開業する者など、その選択には多様性がみられる。
