インドにおいてカースト間の対立は歴史があり、とりわけダリトへの差別は苛烈を極める。そうした中で教育は、彼らの政治・経済・社会的地位向上を図り、差別を解消する手段の一つと言える。しかし、公的教育機関においてダリトの就学率や進学率の低さ、そして留年率や退学率の高さが問題とされてきた。また、大学に進学しても不当に奨学金を取り消されたり、寄宿寮から追い出されたりといった差別行為が横行している。このように、ダリトへの風当たりは強く、教育現場における差別や暴力は後を絶たない。こうした背景から、NGOや宗教団体といった民間団体による教育支援が近年著しい成長を見せてきた。一方で、ダリトが多く居住する農村地域や貧困層が多い地域の民間教育支援の実態は未だ詳細にされていない。これまでのビハール州ブッダガヤでの現地調査と文献調査から、私立学校による教育支援はダリトをはじめとする社会・経済的弱者層に高い人気があることが明らかになっている。これは、公立学校が資金・教員不足などの要因で機能していないためである。こうした背景から、私立学校の存在意義が大きくなる一方で、より一層公立学校の機能不全が進んでいるという状況にある。本研究ではダリトの教育環境を明らかにすることを目的に、民間教育支援中心に地域間比較を行い、その効果の検証を進める。聞き取り調査では、コロナウイルスによって運営が困難な教育機関が多数あることが明らかになった。休校期間の設置や、高学年のみの登校許可、オンライン授業の開始といった教育支援を行ったものの、生徒数が減少し、学費の徴収が困難になった。参与観察では、教育支援を受けていたダリト学生の中には修学・就職・結婚を経て、支援を行っていた親戚との関係を維持しながらも、より一層の自立を図ろうとしていることが明らかになった。
