前年度に引き続き、手元にあるゴシック小説の分析や知識のアップデートに努めた。具体的な活動内容として、小説と女性の関係性を当時の女性作家クレアラ・リーヴの著作The Progress of Romance (1785)を元に調査した。その中でリーヴは、詩は男性読者を対象とした高尚なものとして芸術的学術的評価を得てきた一方で、小説は「女性や子供の読み物」として取るに足らない娯楽とされ、正当な評価を得られていない状況を問題視し、小説に関する偏見への反論を作中登場人物によるディベート形式で試みている。偏見の一つに小説は若者の情操教育に悪い影響を与えるというものがあるが、この点についてリーヴはむしろ小説は若者にとって社会的な教材になるとして前向きに捉えている。リーヴの実作としてのゴシック小説『イギリスの老男爵』(1778)では、簒奪されていた王位が正統な後継者のもとに無事還る物語が描かれていたが、リーヴの小説観を念頭に遡って当該作品を考えれば、リーヴが意図的に王政を支持する保守的な政治観、正統な王によって秩序が安定するという政治的価値観を読者に提示している可能性を指摘できる。また並行して、ジェイン・オースティンの『ノーサンガーアベイ』の「アンチゴシック小説」性（＝ゴシック小説を風刺する小説）の再検討を試みた。確かに作中ゴシック小説の現実離れした荒唐無稽な展開を皮肉る箇所も見受けられるが、同時にゴシック小説と歴史的事象が重ねられる箇所もある。現代研究者の他のオースティン小説の批評において、歴史的な背景や考察が小説の中に織り込まれていることが伺えることからも、オースティンが当該作品に同時代の歴史的事情を織り込みながら自分の政治的な考えを表していると十分に考えられ得るため、引き続き検討を続けたい。当時の資料を通し、世論により多く触れることで時代の雰囲気を掴みながら研究を進めていきたい。
