2022年度は, (1)フランス植民地行政史料の収集・分析, (2)米国での在外研究およびアラビア語文献・史料の収集・分析, という2つの課題に取り組んだ。(1)フランスでの史料調査を実施し, エクサンプロヴァンスの国立海外領文書館に所蔵される植民地行政史料のうち, サハラ現地に派遣された軍人の報告書を中心に撮影した。その結果, オスマン帝国統治下にあった交易の要衝地ガダーミス (現リビア西部)に軍人を派遣するなど, サーヘル産の交易品をフランスに有利な条件で獲得することを目的とした, アルジェリア総督府によるさまざまな工作活動の実態が明らかになった。史料には, こうした植民地権力側の働きかけに対するキャラヴァン商人側の反応を示す記述も散見されるため, これらを子細に検討することで, 本研究の問いの解明に繋げたい。(2)2022年9月から, 米国のカリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校 (UCLA)に客員研究員として滞在し, サハラ西部の社会経済史が専門のギスレーヌ・ライドン氏のもとで, アラビア語史料の分析を進めている。とりわけ, 交易の要衝地ガダーミスを拠点とした商人家系の一つであるユーシャウ家の書簡集を読み込み, 商人側の植民地支配に対する認識とそれに対応した交易品・交易路の変容の分析に注力した。またUCLAには, 日本やフランスでは閲覧できないリビアの学術誌が所蔵されており, 本研究にかかわるアラビア語での研究状況の把握にも努めている。以上の成果を2022年度中に発表することは叶わなかったが, (1)一人のキャラヴァン商人のミクロストーリアを通じた19世紀中葉のサハラ中部の社会経済状況の考察, (2)前年度から進めてきた, サハラ中北部のスーフ地方周辺域に分布した集団スワーファの移動性の変容, という内容について2023年4月と同6月にそれぞれ報告することが内定している。
