今年度新しく始めた課題は、戦前の皇族葬儀が持つ「公」と「私」的な性質の考察である。先行研究では、皇族葬儀の儀式における神式と仏式の併存と、政府要人と同じように葬列に組み込まれた「恩賜」の視覚化と「国費」による葬儀費用の支出という二つの点を基準として、その「公葬」の性質が指摘されてきた。しかし「国費」と言っても、明治20年代に入ると政府の会計システムとは別に、宮中では独自の会計システムが創られるようになった。かかる宮中・府中の財政上の分離に鑑みて、皇族葬儀に当てられた「国費」の性質も捉え直すべき余地が生じる。そこで、明治期の皇族葬儀の出費状況に焦点を当て考察を行った。史料収集については、刊行資料や宮内公文書館所蔵の諸皇族の葬儀録の検討を進め、彼・彼女らの葬儀について実態面から分析を深化させた。さらに、葬儀費用の財源を解明するために、公文録などの史料も使い、宮内省と大蔵省の交渉過程を考察した。研究内容は次の通り、①明治13年6月の皇族費の改定以前、婚礼や葬儀などの費用は常給皇族費とは別の経費で、皇族の家計に含まれない臨時出費という性格を有した。それ以降、常給皇族費の大幅増額に伴い、葬儀をはじめとする臨時出費は皇族自らの支出となったことを明らかにした。②明治24年の久邇宮朝彦親王の葬儀出費問題を中心に考察を行い、彼の事例から、第一、明治13年の皇族費改定はそれ以降の皇族葬儀の出費基準となり、皇室典範成立後の明治24年まで有効であったこと、第二、宮内省の官員にとっては、皇族葬儀の官費支弁は事務的な処理手段として考えられていたこと、以上の二点が確認でき、明治初年から同20年代までの皇族葬儀の出費の枠組みを提示することができた。以上の研究成果を、2022年2月17日の日本史研究会近現代史部会において、「明治期皇族葬儀の「公」と「私」―経費の考察を中心に―」と題し、口頭報告を行った。
