2022年度は、2020年度の宣教師ティモシー・リチャードに関する研究への準備作業をふまえて2021年度に行ったリチャードの中国改革論の主要な著作及び関連史料の精読によって得られた知見、すなわち①リチャードの改革論には清末の他の宣教師には見られない重要な特徴があったこと、②そうした特徴ゆえに、戊戌変法期にリチャードが関係した知識人・官僚の著作には改革の内容や西洋認識の仕方においてリチャードの改革論の多大な影響が見られ、特に康有為「公車上書」、鄭観応『盛世危言』は、リチャードの改革論の集大成『時事新論』（1894）の強い影響とそこからの発展が見出せること、の２点を踏まえて、論文「ティモシー・リチャードの中国改革論と清末知識人」（完成時の分量は雑誌論文ほぼ4本分）の初稿執筆を開始し、ほぼ主要な部分を書き上げた。その内容は以下の通りである。リチャードの『時事新論』の特徴としては、①官僚・知識人との接触経験をふまえてキリスト教色を極力抑制したこと、②清朝改革派官僚や知識人のニーズに応えうる中国改革の包括的プランを精力的に提示したこと、③西洋近代の発展と伝統中国の衰退の原因を「生利分利」という象徴的表現で説明したこと、④マッケンジー の影響をうけ西洋近代の急激な進歩を強調し、人類社会が急激な進歩を遂げる可能を提示したこと、の4点である。また知識人への影響については、第一に康有為「公車上書」の変法に関する提言の部分が、ほぼ『時事新論』に収録された論文を参照または引用することによって構成されていたことを明らかにした。また第二に鄭観応『盛世危言』において鄭の思想の新しさを象徴する記述として従来論及されてきた「商戦上」篇および「教養」篇について、それぞれ『時事新論』所収の「論中国宜特設商部以整頓商務」および「論士宜兼習養民新学」を踏まえて独自に発展させていることを指摘した。
