项目摘要

2021年度は、2020年度に引き続き、17世紀オランダで制作された風俗画相互の類似と相違を、美術市場という観点から掘り下げた。己の画家としてのアイデンティティを守りつつも、需要者・受容者である美術愛好家の立場から見た好みや流行を捉え、作品化することは、絵画供給の側に立つ画家たちの必須の課題であり、そうした状況こそが類似作品の制作を促したのではないかと考えたからである。往時のオランダの美術市場は、画家の数、その制作数ともにきわめて大きく、画家相互の競い合いが熾烈を極めていたのである。一方で、風俗画家たちが取り上げる構図、テーマの類似の程度は、単なる参照として見過ごすことができないほどで、ときには、文字通りの模倣に近い作品も制作され、市場を賑わした。こうしたことを往時の人々ははたしてどのように捉えていたのか。当然出てくるこの種の疑問に答えるべく、17世紀の美術理論家たちの言説――なかんずく、Karel van Mander (1648-1606）の Het schilder-boeck (1604)、Fransiscus Junius(1591-1677）のPictura Veterum (1637、オランダ語訳1641)、Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711)のGroot schilderboek (1707）――を参照することとした。彼らと彼らの著書は17世紀オランダの画家や美術愛好家に大きな影響を及ぼしていたからだ。調査・考察の結果、とりわけJuniusが言及するところの een ongelijcke gelijckheyt (似ていないが似ている）という自己撞着的な概念に、そうした類似のよって来たる考え方があると結論した。その成果は、『フェルメールとそのライバルたち―ー絵画市場と画家の戦略』(KADOKAWA）にまとめ、2021年11月に刊行した。
