本研究は、南北朝期から室町期にかけて京都・東福寺を中心に活躍した絵仏師・吉山明兆（1352～1431）の各作品について、多角的な調査を実施するとともに、宋代仏教美術に関する最新の研究成果をふまえた仏教儀礼的視座からの検証を行い、その具体的な使用実態と絵画機能とを解明することを目的としている。本年度は以下の成果を上げることができた。１）明兆および明兆派作品の調査・撮影：前年度に実施した東福寺本山および同寺塔頭所蔵作品の悉皆的調査の成果に基づき、代表者および分担者（森）により、それらの高精細撮影を行った。第一次撮影は主に小型・中型の掛軸作品を中心に2022年4月26日から28日にかけて実施、第二次撮影は大型作品を中心に同6月22日・23日に実施した。また、同12月6日から10日にかけて、修理の完了した縦11m×横6mを超える明兆最大の作品「仏涅槃図」の調査と分割撮影が実施できたことの意義も大きい。２）明兆筆「五百羅漢図」の研究：若き明兆の代表作「五百羅漢図」について、新たな知見を得ることができた。なかでも、第45号（羅漢会）の画面内に、東福寺開山・円爾が描き込まれていることを見出せたことは、作品の成り立ちや儀礼の場を復元的に考察するうえでもきわめて重要な発見といえる。また、これまで作者が曖昧にされてきた「五百羅漢図下絵」についても、詳細な画風比較を行った結果、明兆筆と断定してよいことが確認できた。さらに調査の過程で、これまで行方不明であった第50号がロシアのエルミタージュ美術館に保管されていることが判明した。３）展覧会による成果の公表：東京国立博物館で2023年３月７日より開催した特別展「東福寺」において、本研究による成果を公表できた。これまで調査を行った明兆作品を一堂に展示し、会場解説や展覧会図録には、調査で得られた最新の知見を盛り込むことができた。

Important insights and insights can be found. The author of the book is ambiguous, and the result of the detailed painting style comparison is confirmed. The investigation process was unclear.
