本研究は、英国スチュアート朝時代 (1603-1649)を対象に、商業劇団が (1)宮廷・民間各々の演劇舞台でどのような劇をどのような演出と衣装で上演していたか、（2)1640年からの内乱に至る社会変化に演劇活動がどのように係わっていたかを明らかにしようとするものである。当時の衣装や演出の実像を可視化しようとする試みは、国外で徐々に研究が進んでいるものの、国内ではこれまでほとんど行われてこなかった。スチュアート朝時代、商業劇団は宮廷公演の回数が増し、王室との関係が密になる一方、市井では王政への反感が増加するなか、観客の意向に沿う反王制・半宮廷の芝居を上演するなど、二面的な活動を行なっていた。前者に関しては、宮廷公演における王室メンバーとの関わり方、後者に関しては、商業劇場での芝居の内容や演出方法の具体例を取り上げながら、内乱に至る社会で演劇が果たした役割を明らかにしようとした。令和4年度には、上記についての研究を引き続き行なうとともに、本研究の成果をまとめる書籍出版の準備を進めた。2020年以降、コロナウィルス感染拡大により海外での学会参加や調査が行えなかったが、令和4年度にはロンドンで行われた国際学会（The Association of Dress Historians)に出席し、市内の博物館等で調査を実施した。書籍出版準備に関しては、英国ルネサンス演劇に特徴的な役柄である古典古代の神々や英雄、魔女や悪魔、道化、妖精などが、どのような演出・衣装で演じられていたか、チューダー朝からスチュアート朝の宮廷饗宴・商業劇場の一時史料、二次史料をもとに執筆作業を続けた。
